With Amazon expected to unveil a new version of its Kindle e-book reader in less than two weeks, tech enthusiasts on the Web are taking their best guesses as to what the online retailer has planned for the popular device.

Amazon sparked the speculation Tuesday with an e-mail sent to the media announcing a Feb. 9 news conference at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York. Beyond confirming that Amazon chief executive Jeffrey Bezos would host the event, the company has provided no details about the event.

Nevertheless, to industry watchers, including The New York Times, Amazon’s purpose is clear: Launch the next version of what the company claims is its most popular consumer electronics device.

Indeed, Amazon’s Web site certainly points to something ready to happen with the Kindle. The retailer has not sold the device for awhile, saying it’s sold out. Amazon, however, is taking orders and said it expects to start shipping the device in four to six weeks — a timeframe that would fit in nicely with the unveiling of a Kindle 2.0.

Despite the Kindle’s popularity, most experts agree the $359 device is in need of a facelift. While the Kindle gets high marks for ease of use and a free wireless connection that lets users buy books from Amazon, the gadget, which is more than a year old, is ready for a redesign.

CrunchGear is expecting a thinner Kindle with a touch screen. The Los Angeles Times is reporting the possibility of a sleeker design that relocates the page-forward and page-back buttons so users are less likely to push them accidentally.

While the new Kindle is likely to contain improvements in its black-and-white screen, color is unlikely to be one of them. That’s because E-Ink, the company that makes the technology behind the display, is not yet ready to offer color.

Finally, for those interested in seeing pictures of the upcoming device, the Boy Genius Report claims to have them.

Amazon’s major rival in the e-book reader business is Sony, which launched a its device, called the Reader, in October. The latest Reader, which uses the same E-Ink display, sells for $400.

A few days ago, the waiting time was about 2 weeks and it suddently jumped to almost 4 months!

So what I suspect is that people who are waiting right now will get the version 2.0 as soon as it will be released. If I were you, I’d order one right away just to be among the first one to get it! In fact, I’m seriously considering another one for my wife.

So a word of advise: don’t go nuts and buy a used one from Amazon. Some sell theirs for $1500 (see here !). If you want a decent price, hit eBay (here is a list of Kindles on eBay ) but hurry up before it’s too late!

Although the Kindle is pretty sturdy, you need to protect the screen. This is the most sensitive part. It’ll probably survive if you drop it from a table, but if you press too hard on the screen, chances are it will simply crack.

This is why I opted for a hard cover for my kindle. I was lucky enough to get the “Genuine Leather Executive Jacket” by M-edge.

One of the neat thing is that it integrates with most booklights. Of course, it’s got really plush interior for maximum device protection (pretty good actually!).

I love it and so do most people. It’s got 4.5 stars out of 5 and it’s worth every penny!

Boy Genius recently unveiled shots of what might be the Kindle 2.0…!

If you take a look at the pictures before, you’ll notice that the Amazon e-book reader is now more rounded, more iPod-ish. However, it’s still white with the same original screen.

The cool sparkly LCD status bar seems to be gone, a joystick replaces (or appears to replace) the clickwheel, and the other buttons are smaller. This will prevent accidental page turns, my pet peeve…

As expected, no word on the availability. Here are pictures from “Boy Genius”.

The popularity of the Kindle is pretty amazing.

I just received a note from a fellow reader saying that the Kindle might be sold out due to the incredible promotion made by Oprah last week.

Kindle sales appear likely to get a significant boost on Friday, with talk-show megastar Oprah Winfrey apparently about to endorse Amazon’s digital book reader.

Amazon is featuring a trailer of her Friday show on its site with Oprah talking about her new “favourite gadget” which is “life changing for me”. From a side-on view, the product she is talking about looks very like a Kindle.

In an email to subscribers, Amazon says its founder Jeff Bezos will be appearing on Oprah to talk to her about her new favourite gadget.

Talking to analysts on Amazon’s third-quarter conference call on Wednesday, he denied that digital books were having a cannibalistic effect on regular book sales:

“So far what we have seen with the Kindle book units is that they are additive to physical book units. So when somebody buys a Kindle and the period after, they buy 1.6 times as many Kindle books as they bought physical books prior to buying a Kindle, and they continue to buy the same number of physical books. So that’s what we have seen so far and it’s obviously a very positive outcome. We hope that continues.”

Mr Bezos said he did expect digital books to force down prices of physical ones in the long term but Amazon would hope to sell more units.

A new version of Kindle would not appear until next year at the earliest, the call was told, but manufacturing capacity had been ramped up for the existing one and Kindles were in stock and available for immediate shipment.

That’s good news for the retailer given the sell-out results of Ms Winfrey’s usual endorsements.
