The headlines for the past several weeks are full of stories of venerable newspapers around the country in dire financial straits. Readership and revenue from advertisers are both down and papers such as The Boston Globe, The Detroit Free Press and others may not make it beyond the next year or so. Only 1/3 of people age 30 or under read print newspapers.It is tempting, on the one hand to say let newspapers as a news source die out. They are the buggy whip of the 21st Century. On the other hand, print newspapers are one of the few places where you can follow a story in depth. Most other news media specialize in sound bites and quick pieces of info. When I was young, back in the 1970′s we dreamed of a future where your morning newspaper was delivered to you wirelessly on a flat plastic-like sheet or film. We have not quite reached those days. But we are close. The original Kindle gets many major newspapers, but they are someone difficult to read. Can the DX change that? How much would you be willing to pay for a subscription to your local newspaper on a device like the Kindle DX? Would it influence how you receive your news? Could it save the printed news media?
