This morning I woke up and decided I wanted to go out to breakfast. The idea of consuming breakfast and reading from my kindle 2 sounded really appealing too me. I got to the restaurant and placed my order, and then I pulled my Kindle 2 out and noticed that part of the screen was empty. What I mean by empty is that part of the screen that has the screen saver was devoid of any print, or picture. I thought this was weird because so far my Kindle 2 was, or had been bug free. Ever since I received the device 3 months ago I’ve been nothing but happy, and impressed with it, but today it IS a serious problem and as I type this I am becoming more alarmed. I’ve purchased 300 books so far for this device and now I cannot gain access too them.I then pulled out my laptop and went on the internet to find out how to fix this problem. It seems that the only way to reset the Kindle 2 is pressing alt-shift R or sliding the power switch and holding it for 15 to 20 seconds, and letting the device reboot. This has totally failed. Part of the screen flashes for a moment and then stops. All that remains is the screen saver and the huge blank spot that is right next too it. What could cause this? It was not dropped nor stepped on. It was not handled in a rough fashion. It was not exposed to any sever temperatures. The Kindle 2 has been sitting on a desk for 1 full day, and NO it was or isn’t drained from lack of power. My device is dead and useless, and I cannot access the 300 books that I have purchased.I am unemployed and still looking for a job, so I cannot purchase a new Kindle. Also my warranty has expired already, so I can’t have Amazon look into the matter without having to pay them a large amount of money WHICH I don’t have.Right now I am very upset, and totally angry.Any suggestions? Has anyone had this particular situation happen too them? How did you fix your kindle 2?

I had the same thing happen: it had worked perfectly until all of a sudden, it would not turn off…or change pages…or do ANYTHING.
I tried everything recommended to me on the website and nothing worked so I asked them (through the support page on the website) to call me back. A techie called me in just a couple of minutes and within a few minutes more (after walking me through the same steps I had tried from the instructions online), he said sure enough, it was toast (my words, not theirs).
Then, he said for me to box it up and send it back and Amazon would send me a replacement. He emailed me a UPS trackable shipping label; I took it over to UPS at my lunch hour and UPS put my broken Kindle in one of their mailers with Amazon’s shipping label. By the time I got back to my office, I had received an email from Amazon that a replacement Kindle was in the mail to me; and, by the next week, I was downloading all the books to my new replacement. Needless to say, I was pretty impressed. It was seamless.
Now, I had ordered my Kindle in November, 2007, and received around Christmas…and my first (and only) problem occurred about December 1, 2008, so my warranty may have been the reason for such an easy solution to the situation. Nonetheless, I have been a happy customer ever since.
Why not try contacting Amazon and see if it works for you…good luck and happy reading.
