Is Amazon really changing book contents?

A friend at work that knows I have a Kindle, told me she saw a program where authors and publishers are outraged that Amazon is changing book contents based on pressure from readers’ complaints. Can this possibly be true? Can Amazon do that? Why would they? Recommend to those people to check out the book as much as possible before purchasing. If this is true, I am profoundly disappointed that Amazon would do that reprehensible disservice to their readers. I for one hope to be an author in the near future and would not want or give anyone that kind of permission. It’s like if you don’t like a tv program, change the channel.
