Kindle 2 battery life

Posted by Kindle 22 Mar 2009 2 Comments »

Does anyone care to share their experiences with the battery life of their Kindle 2? I’m trying to decide if I’m unrealistic in my expectations. Recently, after a full overnight charge, I was able to read for about 4-5 hours while on a day-long plane trip.I noticed and tried to estimate the time after the battery was finished before my journey was.I intend to pay much closer attention to the charged battery time in the future.Does anyone have more accurate data?

My guess is that you have about 10 hours of heads down page turning reading of the Kindle 2 (without wireless on) and that is constant reading. I put about 5 hours of this type of reading on my Kindle 2 after recharging plus a brief 10 book download time included (maybe 10 minutes) in this time and am at half battery after a full charge.

Amazon claims 2 weeks of reading without being connected to their 3G network. This is obviously based on an estimate of how much the average reader would read in that 2 week period. It would be better served if Amazon would publish the actual hours of reading of already downloaded Kindle 2 books that the battery would support. I can’t find that quantification anywhere. So I am just guestimating 10 hours.

Being connected to the whispernet really degrades battery life even if you are not downloading books. Turn it off whenever possible. I have also found that putting the device to sleep eats up more battery life than just turing it off. Displaying pictures seems to take up more power than displaying plain text.

Brad is totally right, enable wireless ONLY when you need it. Otherwise, it’ll become much like a cell phone, you’ll end up charging it on a daily basis and I doubt your battery will last very long.
