Kindle DX .PDF, .DOC file with out conversion?

I would like confirmation that the Kindle DX does NOT require you to email your PDF files to Amazon for them to convert them. I would like to use it to read work documents, but don’t think its a good idea to send potentially sensitive documents to them. Also, I understand you you DO need to send .DOC files to them for conversion at a cost of $0.15 per MB.Is my understanding correct?Are there third party converters I can use on my PC to convert them and then transfer the files using the USB port?
