Options for locating lost Kindle?

I recently left a Kindle in a cab. Of course, I filed a lost item report and Im trying to see if it was handed in to police (I dont hold out much hope frankly but Im willing to at least try). But th really bad thing is that its still active and anyone using it can buy books that go on my credit card. (I dont want to de-register it just yet – see below as to why). I even sent a text file (called ‘README’) via email to the device with my name, phone number and email address, in the hope that someone will read it on the home screen, be kind and do the right thing.Anyone else have this happen and what did you do about it?Apple’s recent iPhone software announcement included the ability to locate a lost phone and even to remotely wipe all data from it. I wish Amazon would think about including a similar feature in future Kindles. I read somewhere that while its technically possible to locate the device (its on Sprint’s network and cell phones can do this), Amazon choose not to allow anyone to do that – is that true?

  1. Yes, it is true. Since each Kindle has a unique ID, Amazon could merely turn off the Kindle, making it useless to any theif. This would prompt theives to return them for a reward maybe. But, Amazon appears to encourage theives by refusing to do that. So, be prepared to have Amazon refuse to turn off a stolen Kindle even when they know a theif has it. They are apparently willing to accept the theifs money just for the greed. Would never had purchased one knowing this fact.
