Recommendations for different editions of classics?

I’ve been looking for a Kindle Edition of Henry James’s The Ambsassadors and two or three of his other late novels, because I need to complete a scholarly paper while on the road. There are 4-5 different editions, ranging from 99 cents to 3.50. None of the "publishers" are houses I am familiar with (Read When You Want, B&R, etc.). Does anyone have good/bad experience with any particular publisher? And why won’t amazon let us know what the differences between editions are? Even the reviews are from non-kindle editions. I’d like to be able to pick, for example, the Oxford Classics Kindle edition over the Dover Kindle edition. Thanks.
