Some ethical questions – would love to hear your feedback/thoughts.
Hi – I read recent posts about converting files and it seems that it is possible to remove DRM (copy protection) from ebooks. This made me think about some ethic questions I have. I would like to hear other perspectives/opinions.1 – if you have a paper book you bought, would you feel it is ok to get a pirate version of the same book from one of the torrent sites?2 – if you buy a DRM’ed book. Do you feel it is ok to remove the DRM from the book?3 – Would your response to 2 change whether you have bought the paper book or not? What I mean is: if you have the paper book, would you feel it is ok to buy a DRM’ed book and remove the DRM from the book?To start the discussion, I will share my perspective.1 – I would say yes for the first question – as long as I don’t sell the paper book. Not sure about donating it for charity – I guess I will need to hear your comments/thoughts. I am inclined to think it would be ok to donate it for charity or to a library. Not to a friend, though.2 – No. I don’t think it would be ok to remove the DRM from a book you purchased online. Unless the retailer goes out of business and if you don’t do it, you would lose your ability to read the book. Even in this situation, I don’t think it would be appropriate to distribute/sell/give the unprotected book.3 – If you bought the paper book, than I would probably apply the same rule as 1 above.I haven’t really given a lot of thought to the above questions. So I guess based on the feedback/ideas I will probably change/adapt them.Have a great weekend!
Nice writing style. Looking forward to reading more from you.
